MSA & standards overview
Optical transceivers are interchangeable because vendors follow shared industry specifications rather than proprietary designs. Most begin as a Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) — an agreement among manufacturers that a module of a given form factor has the same mechanical, electrical and management interface no matter who makes it.
Who publishes what
- The SFF Committee (now the SNIA SFF TWG) publishes the SFF-xxxx documents that
define the two-wire (I²C) management interface and memory layout for SFP-class and QSFP-class modules.
- The QSFP-DD MSA, together with OSFP and COBO groups, created CMIS, now
maintained at the OIF, for high-speed multi-lane modules.
- The SFP-DD MSA publishes MIS for two-lane SFP-DD modules.

Why it matters for CodingBox
