GBIC
The Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) was the first widely adopted hot-pluggable optical module. It brought the idea that later defined the whole industry: the switch port stays fixed, and the optics are a swappable module with its own identity memory.

Roughly three times the volume of an SFP, the GBIC limited port density and was replaced as soon as the smaller SFP appeared.

Management interface
GBIC defined a serial ID memory read over a two-wire interface — vendor name, part number, serial number, transceiver codes, distances. That layout became the basis of the SFP identification block and, later, of SFF-8472. GBICs predate digital diagnostics, so there is typically no DDM.
Compatibility notes
- Not interchangeable with SFP mechanically or electrically.
- Vendor lock existed already: many platforms checked the ID memory and refused
unknown modules — the same problem later generations inherited (see Vendor lock).
